Burnham Juniors (2) v (3) Harefield United U11's

by Scott Trotman

A week after their less than convincing showing at the Selsey SCI tournament, the lads at least rounded off their regular season with a hard earned win against a spirited Burnham Juniors Lions.

The afternoon kick off was heralded by some bright Spring sunshine, and the atmosphere was suitably relaxed on the sidelines.

The Lions kicked off, and the first minutes or so found both teams trying to settle with neither getting the upper hand.

The Hares soon began to get the upperhand though, as they started to get the ball down, relax, and play to feet - and on 10 minutes they deservedly took the lead.

The ball was bouncing about in the Lions area until Alfie got hold of it and lofted the ball back over his head, where Jonny was waiting; and he cleverly swivelled and shot in one movement past the keeper from 10 yards (1-0).

It should have been two a few minutes later when Alfie ran through onto a good through ball from Max, but as he approached the onrushing keeper, he steered his shot inches wide of the left hand post.

On 20 minutes, Burnham crafted their first clear chance of the game, but Finlay repelled them with a good one on one save, and then he was called into action again a few minutes later as the Lions began to come more into the game. In fact, by half time, and though Harefield were still leading by the solitary goal, it had been an evenly contested first period.

Harefield started the second half on the front foot, and Alfie went close to doubling the lead on 38 minutes, but again shot narrowly wide.

The game was turned on it's head midway through the second half by a couple of defensive lapses, as first a lack of decisiveness caused hesitation at the back to let in the Lions for their equaliser, and then an attempted clearance by Finlay was sabotaged by a divot, and this let the same player free to roll the ball in to an empty net (1-2).

The Hares searched for a way back into the game, and found it on 51 minutes. Jamie T found Raghav down the right, and he in turn crossed for Alfie who hooked in the equaliser with his right foot from close range (2-2).

Finlay then had to make a crucial save, when a brilliant turn by their double goal-scorer led to him playing in their centre-forward, and both sides seemed determined not to settle for a draw.

Three minutes from time, it was the Reds who were gifted a winner, when the Lions' keeper spilt the ball as Raghav advanced. Raghav then contested the loose ball, and as it spun clear he popped it into the gaping net (3-2).

The final whistle went soon after, and the team shook hands with the opposition on the back of finishing season on a relative high. Hopefully, this will give them some belief to carry into the upcoming end of season tournaments.

Tom and Dean were unable to split the three players who they thought deserved to be in the running for MoM, and so in the end gave an equal award of the accolade to Finlay, Max and Jonny.
