Spartan South Midlands League Matchday Nine

Harefield succumbed to a heavy drubbing at the hands of Cristian Colas’ side as the visitors ran out comfortable 5-2 winners.

Any hopes of a statement win in similar vein as that of Tuesday’s against Harpenden Town were all but dashed in the first half, as Lenny Farhall’s opener was briskly cancelled out by a Charlie Black double and a Gareth Hunt set piece.

A late flurry of goals began with Ethan Flanagan nodding in a Dave Parkinson cross, leading onto a brilliant Elliot Dobbs solo effort to give the Hares a slither of encouragement five minutes from time.

Rhys Jean made sure Dobbs’ effort was in vain and perhaps confirmed what everyone knew was a sure result with a fifth Biggleswade goal.

The impressive victory means Biggleswade’s unbeaten run now extends to six games and they leapfrog their hosts into third place in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division.

Harefield went into the game with some noticeable absentees from the team sheet that narrowed Jason Shaw and Michael Molokwu’s options pre kick-off, including Harry McCorkell (broken ankle) and Sam Shaw (hamstring).

Lenny Farhall had a string of opportunities arrive before opening the Hares’ account, notably being released by Elliot Dobbs with a ball over the top that was expertly cut out by Jordan Jarrold.

Farhall was also afforded an open goal after the retreating Ollie Leslie sliced his clearance, but the young striker was unable to fashion a proper effort on his weaker side.

Leslie had his hands stung by a Farhall shot that would have crept into the far left corner but for the athletic interception from the ‘keeper.

Ethan Flanagan was carded for a high boot on Dobbs, but the full back got up and bagged himself an assist soon after with a delightful whipped cross where all was needed was a head to direct the ball into the far corner.

Step up Lenny Farhall.

There though, unfortunately for the home side, seemed to be a wake up call for Leslie and co; a turning point for the visitors manifested in scoring in their first possession since conceding.

Dave Parkinson combined well with forward Charlie Clayton on the left flank, before releasing a cross of his own that was met by Charlie Black and finished emphatically.

If the teams were trading blow for blow before, Biggleswade had Harefield on the ropes now as Black rounded off a quick counter attack, tapping home a cross from the overlapping full back Nilo Keane.

There was nothing doing at the other end of the field when Farhall felt he was tripped as he rounded Leslie at a critical point in a potential comeback for Jason Shaw’s men.

The turntables were really put into motion when Gareth Hunt‘s floated free kick found no recipient but the back of Reece Mallett’s net, dispelling what was initially a bright start for Harefield who now had an almighty battle ahead to salvage anything from the meeting going into the break.

Mallett had a big let off at the start of the second period, who after a poor attempt to clear his lines gave Codi Spavins a chance to truly put the game out of reach.

Spavins couldn’t finish off the opportunity that proved to be their last for a portion of the game, where Biggleswade camped out in their own half in an attempt to halt the ensuing Harefield pressure.

When an opportunity did next arise for Biggleswade it came from the head of Flanagan, whose effort crashed off the woodwork and was a stark reminder that his side could do damage in the game.

Austin Schoefield rifled a thunderous volley just wide that had it gone in, would’ve been a sure-fire way to rally the home crowd, such was the skill and purposefulness behind the strike.

Mallett done well to deny Clayton after retrieving the ball and going clear on goal, but what became clear at the other end of the pitch was the noticeable lack of variety in avenues created to get the all important second.

Samuel Adetiga did however create problems all afternoon with his drive and switch of pace as he switched wings with Kerran Birch, along with Gurkan Gokmen’s first action forcing a corner with a shot from the edge of the area.

Star performer Dobbs and Joe Clifton had starring moments through tracking back and goal-saving tackles respectively, but Parkinson once again turned provider when an unmarked Flanagan made sure his header was on target this time and made it 4-1.

Biggleswade’s credit should be awarded to their back line, in particular to the centre back pairing of Jordan Jarrold and captain Jordan Wright, who throughout the game marshalled their team mates and read potential balls and cleared well.

Elliot Dobbs was able to find a chink in the armour of the Biggleswade, beating two men and sweeping home a strike beyond the graps of Leslie into the bottom right corner, reducing the defecit to two with five minutes on the clock.

Debutant Rhys Jean had other ideas about a fairytale ending for the Hares, making no mistake on the break after Clayton done well to stay onside when retreiving a clearance and then releasing the substitute Jean in added time.

The damning full time result will spur on the Hares when they take on Oxhey Jets next, while Biggleswade will want to keep the hot streak running against strugglers London Colney at Second Meadow in their bid for promotion.
